No, I'd prefer for the different engine types to differentiate on more than just %power usage and %cost, i.e. at least offer a little difference on movement speed. Otherwise there seems to be little reason to research anything but Nuclear engines because you are far enough ahead by the time you find...

I agree with part of this. Particularly in the engines portion of the propulsion tree, there is no differentiation between engine types in distance. Also, power usage and cost are of secondary importance to me, so I see no reason to not focus on nuclear engines and just keep on that tree. It'd be ne...

Personally, the flexibility that I'd like is to be able to focus on 2 or 3 things in a branch (equally is fine with me) instead of my only options being 1 item or all items in a branch. That would solve a lot of the problems for me.

Got to agree that I like the turn based as well and is the reason I got it in the first place, but then again moving a large number of ships from the edge of the battle screen to the battle nearer the middle of the screen is a very time consuming task, but as each ships turn are based on initiative...

Have you tried combining them into a fleet, you can have 10 ships in a single fleet, while this doesn't help with combat scenarios, this helps a lot with travelling throughout the galaxy.
