For many 4x games the races are just different assets/graphics with the ability to set different racial traits/settings and a race description.
What we have planned is that you have the option to create your own custom race in Horizon, give it a name, select racial traits/unique abilities and so on and still be able to play in regular mode with the missions (if you so choose) and with/against the other races.
This custom race can be a modded race, one of the alien races (this is still custom in that sense) or any race you can imagine and want to play as with mods. We are going to seek input from the community and our early adopters before we finalize these decisions because we see this tightly integrated with modding and we are not ruling out anything.

It really doesn't bother me if I have to be humans, I love the game, its brilliant, abit buggy, but its an alpha, so that's expected.
