So close to understanding supply...

Post by TheBeardyMan »

As far as I understand:

A cargo hold stores 200 units of cargo.

A small ship consumes 10 cargo units per turn.
A medium ship consumes 50 cargo units per turn.
A large ship consumes 100 cargo units per turn.
A huge ship consumes 200 cargo units per turn.
The distance to the nearest friendly colonized system is the number of dry turns a task force must endure between resupplies; a task force actually in a friendly colonized system receives a resupply every turn.

But what I don't understand is why the zone of supply is vertically stretched when multiple colonized star systems are involved e.g. the zone of supply for a task force with 8 turns of supply might extend 8 sectors east and west, but 15 sectors north and south. What secret numbers and algorithms am I not seeing?

Does running out of supplies atm, make any difference?

To me it seems that my scout can go anywhere on the map, never has to go back to my area. And seems to get resupplied even when on other side of the map.

Supply is calculated in a radius, but the sectors are not perfectly square (in spite of the visual representation on the Galaxy Map, they are wider than they are tall), so the supply range spills over into more sectors north-south than east-west.

If a ship is out of it's supply range, it moves slower to it's destination (it awaits imaginary "refuel" ships once it runs out of supplies)

While in supply range, supplies arrive before you run out. Outside of supplies range, supplies still arrive but take longer (the further you are, the longer the next resupply) causing your ships to slow down, not be able to refill ammo, replacement crew and unable to repair non-core ship components.
