Is Dig automatically successful, or is it worth issuing the dig command across multiple turns (on a world with ancient ruins) if you didn't find anything the first time?
Does Dig become unselectable once it is no longer useful?

Re: Dig (More than once?)
IIRC…I think that dig does not apply to ancient ruins. Any fruits from this are only acquired upon colonization.

Re: Dig (More than once?)
In Alpha and Beta you did, I think what is happening is other races did the dig already but didn't set up a colony as it gives to benefits. The dig and the buildings you get if you colonies.StoneCold822 wrote:IIRC…I think that dig does not apply to ancient ruins. Any fruits from this are only acquired upon colonization.

Re: Dig (More than once?)
After reading this post I decided to keep an eye on this ingame.
As of this post I just came across a world with ancient ruins about 10 minutes ago.
Description says the following:
Our scientists have concluded that this world was home to an advances space-faring civilization over a millennial ago.
I did a dig on the world before colonizing.
The dig took 2 turns for me, I only issued the dig command once, after which I got a major breakthrough in the field of Electronics.
I noticed that the dig option is always available, regardless of whether or not the world has anything discovered or not, even before it has been surveyed as well as after a dig has been completed.
Hope this answers the questions of the OP.
Maybe an idea to have that dig option grayed out when there is nothing to dig?

I'm also trying to determine that if instead you colonize a world with a dig-able good do you a) get the discovery automatically when the colony is created and/or b) the discovery is still there and must be manually dug out or c) something different happens

Tested this after reading your post, and the answer to your question is b).eidolad wrote:I'm also trying to determine that if instead you colonize a world with a dig-able good do you a) get the discovery automatically when the colony is created and/or b) the discovery is still there and must be manually dug out or c) something different happens
Its still there, you have to manually dig it out.
Easy to confirm for yourself.
Re: Dig (More than once?)
Thanks Bansheedragon correct. In fact I found that *i could dig on an AI planet* for a goody last night. Was ROFL time.
Re: Dig (More than once?)
One downside I found is that I colonized a world that had some ruins of an ancient civilization (or something along those lines) which translated to some structures already in place, unfortunately this was early on the game and it actually backfired since it brought with it all the maintenance cost of those buildings with a very small population base to make income off of, net result it essentially bankrupted me. Now unfortunately the AI isn't hampered by maintenance costs (or figured out how to work the system where I haven't) so I doubt you could use that to bankrupt the AI if it was on a planet without having "dug" first.eidolad wrote:Thanks Bansheedragon correct. Re: Dig (More than once?)
I just started a new game today.
I ended up getting steamrolled in the last game after the Varians declared war on me and I had just barely squired and researched to he proper level the weapon that makes them vulnerable.
I found a planet with ruins in one of the first systems I surveyed.
After digging on that planet, I ended up getting ALL techs increased by 1 level, not bad so early in the game.
A second planet of the same type only increased my knowledge in the field of weapons, but did not increase by a full level, only 75%.
